A Hint Of A Challenge

My friend Jayne has thrown down a challenge: Write a story (beginning, middle and end) that hints at a larger story, but is complete within itself, in 25 words or less. Because I can never resist a challenge, I decided to give it a shot. Because I’m slightly crazy, I came up with two submissions. I hope you enjoy them and please visit Jayne’s hint fiction post, give her some love and see who else has participated. Or throw your own hat into the ring.

The Challenge (15 words)

“You know, it’s a lot harder than I expected.”
“Yeah. I hear that a lot.”

guilt

Guilt (24 words)

As they led the young man from the room, he watched with savage satisfaction as a woman sobbed. Now they both lost a child.

  1. Love them! Literally LOL’d at the first one and then was immediately sobered by the second. Talk about emotional whiplash! Thanks for playing, Nicky.

    1. Thank you, Jayne, for inviting me to participate. I wrote the first one rather quickly and felt like it was a little lightweight for a challenge hosted by such a talented lady, hence the second one. 🙂

  2. Oh, ah! You did good. I want to know what that young man did or I just want to beat the sheet out of him. Hee. Oh, and as long as I don’t have to scale that rock, we’re good.

  3. “Guilt” hits a little too close to home given what a dear friend of mine recently experienced.

    1. Hello Deborah, welcome! I’ve been having a hard time finding the motivation to write so I appreciated when Jayne gave me a “gentle nudge” to participate. 🙂

      1. Sheesh, kill a few innocent people, beat a woman and torture a prisoner and all of a sudden I’ve got this reputation. Cool. 🙂
